My horse

I once owned a horse. I've sold her since and now she belongs to someone else. That person and a friend of mine were out trekking recently, in the high country somewhere and this photo was taken of their horses. I named my horse 'Atawhai'. I don't know if she still carries the same name.  That's her with the tail and 4 legs (foreground).

Was the horse's name a description or a kind of hopeful prayer?

Both. She was nice enough, but I'm not a horsey guy and she soon learned who was boss - her. My downfall was letting a friend put her gelding into the same paddock as Atawhai. From that moment on, she refused to come now matter how vigorously I waved the hay and winnied.

I think there are very few animals we can genuinely own. Dogs. Maybe some bird species. Guinea pigs? Hmmmm. Definitely not cats.
Horses always reminded me of teenagers. You pay their bills and care for them. In a careless moment they may return the favour by acknowledging your existence.
Horses seem to be, in some ways, quite libertarian in their outlook on life.

AC, very few of us have that 'special' relationship with a horse - and I am not one of the few - but to witness a person and a horse in cinque is a beautiful thing.

I've never been in cinque with a horse, Fred. Probably not with a teenager either, AC but I haven't seriously irritated either, either, so that's good enough for me.

Yours is the best sort of horse, Robert. I've always liked horses that live at someone else's house.

Did you ever see the sway-back horse episode of Mr Ed?
Unforgettable.

Having spent years as a teenager on a family farm where they bred and trained racehorses, I am suspicious of all horses. Nasty at both ends at best.

Perhaps that's why I am blessed with daughters who just luuuurrrrv horses and one in particular that has that special way with them. You're right fred, it is a thing of beauty to watch. Even if it is a only mobile glue factory she is in cinque with....
